H.M.S Cornwall was built by Yarrow Shipbuilders on the Clyde and completed in 1988. She represented a later development of the Type 22 frigate design, incorporating lessons learned during the Falklands Conflict and improvements to her weapons, sensors and aviation facilities.
The ship was fitted with a 4.5″ gun forward and a Dutch Signal Goalkeeper CIWS forward of the foremast. Her flight deck was also widened to accommodate the larger Merlin helicopter.
