H.M.S Campbeltown was built by Cammell Laird and completed in 1989. The design incorporated several changes resulting from the lessons learned during the Falklands Conflict, including a 4.5″ gun forward and a Dutch Signal Goalkeeper CIWS positioned forward of the foremast.
The flight deck was also widened to accommodate the new Merlin helicopter when it entered service.
