HMS Active was one of the eight ships of the Amazon, or Type 21, Class. The ships were built by Vosper Thornycroft and Yarrow between 1974 and 1978 and were designed as fast, modern general-purpose frigates for the Royal Navy.
The Type 21 frigates proved popular ships on which to serve, but their original design had limited potential for accommodating newer weapons systems and sensors. Seven of the eight ships served during the Falklands Conflict in the early 1980s, with HMS Ardent and HMS Antelope both lost during Argentine air attacks.
None of the Type 21 frigates remains in Royal Navy service today, making them an interesting subject for scale model builders and naval enthusiasts.
